Cher Defends Chaz Bono’s Selection for Dancing With the Stars. Chaz Bono has become the primary discussion when referring to the upcoming season of DWTS. History is about to be made with the first transgender contestant Chaz Bono. Many are very excited but also many are throwing punches and making hurtful comments. Cher, a singing legend, has come out and is defending her son with Sony Bono. Cher feels that her son, who was born a female, but underwent surgery in 2010, is being unnecessarily and viciously attacked on blogs, message boards, in the media and on late night TV shows. Bono, 42, is paired with pro dancer Lacey Schwimmer. Lacey has also been vocal about the recent comments about Bono.
