When it comes to "Transformers," there usually is more than meets the eye. But in this case, what you see is what you get: The title of the third installment in Michael Bay's robot franchise is "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon" (apparently "Transformers: The One Without Megan Fox" is a no-go).
TFW first broke the news when it noticed that a trio of "Transformers" novels are currently available for pre-order on Amazon. The books, which will be released May 17, 2011, bear the titles: "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon - Secret of the Autobots," "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon – Autobots Betrayed!," and "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon: Invasion of the Decepticons." Subsequent sleuthing on the website's part found that Paramount/DreamWorks has already registered the domain TransformersTheDarkOfTheMoonMovie.com, and Collider says it has confirmed the title with sources close to the production. MTV News has reach out to Paramount for comment, and we'll bring you any update when we have it.
Assuming the title sticks, "Dark of the Moon" has already served as title to several novels, a play and -- most noteworthy of all -- an episode of TV's "The Unit," though we're betting that "Transformers" isn't alluding to any of those; "dark of the moon" can also refer to the last three days of the lunar cycle, when the moon is not visible in the night sky. Whether that means the robots will, you know, destroy the moon or simply that the events of the film take place during that span in the lunar cycle remains to be seen. As of right now, all we know about the film's plot is that it's rumored to involve a space race between Russia and the U.S., will supposedly feature less slapstick humor and, according to Bay, will provide a nice, neat end to the trilogy.
"Transformers: The Dark of the Moon" is scheduled to get its robot on in theaters July 1, 2011. What do you think of the title?
